Your city does not have a gay problem. Your city has gays. You're the problem.

There's a followup article about this video on CNN: http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2008/03/10/dnt.ok.lawmaker.anti.gay.kwtv
On it, the author of the anti-gay rant ends with "What is wrong with me as an American exercising my right to free speech?"
Which seems to be a common dodge today for people who decide to be obnoxious.
Of course she has a right to say what she said. There should never be a law that says she can't express that view. Likewise, however, there should never be a law - or even a sense - that for some reason she shouldn't be held accountable for her views. Just because she has a right to say them doesn't suddenly make her immune to criticism. It doesn't make what she said any less bigoted or less ignorant.
Words have power. You have the right to wield to wield that power, but you have to take responsibility for it as well. And no one who doesn't understand that should be holding public office.
Oh, and all those people who are objecting to you? I believe free speech applies to them as well. Surely you're not suggesting there's a problem with them exercising the same right, are you?
