Why we're not blogging here

Today my mother wrote to see if we were OK, because we haven't been blogging much. This, then, is the 21st century: "Now be sure to eat right. And wear clean underwear and a nice hat. And be sure to blog every day."

In fact, the reason we're not blogging much at Xark is because Janet and I are blogging/vlogging and podcasting our collective asses off at SpoletoToday 2008. Janet's in charge this year, which means her dream has finally come true: She gets to tell me what to do, and I have to do it.

Here are the videos I've put up so far...

Images of the road

So we're back from our tour of the Deep South: 7 days, 6 states and plenty of gas ($3.17 a gallon in Alabama).  I've taken some of my photographs and put them in a gallery. There was snow and cool architecture and plenty of new ideas and new friends. Check it out if you have time.

Sweetness overload

I'm not going to put these on the front, because ... well, just because. And they're not new: They hit Digg big last year, apparently. But these shots of a deer and a rabbit, photographed by Canadian photographer Tanja Askani of Alberta, Canada, do seem to be saying something about companionship. It's the holidays and we're bombarded by maudlin marketing crap, so I don't want to hit you with something else kitschy, but if you're in the mood for it, or just in dire need of it... (Thanks to Patricia Anthony for the e-mail forward)

Breathtaking African photography

Brandt
I just found this one via the magic of Stumbleupon: A gallery of black and white photography by someone named Nick Brandt. I love black and white, and these are masterful images.

Think Warm Thoughts

Clintonhealth
News outlets are reporting that Hillary Clinton has unveiled her plans for national health care. I don't know many of the details, but if the picture accompanying the story is anything to go by, it looks as though they are planning on keeping costs down by offering low tech colonoscopy exams for everyone!

Think healthy, people.

Put a Kitty On It

Janet and Detroit Dixie reached an important conclusion while shopping last night: Women will go for just about anything if it's got a cute kitty on it.

Which got me to thinking: If this is true (and if Janet and Double D agree on it, it must be), couldn't we use this bit of wisdom in the marketing of all sorts of otherwise irredeemable failures?  Such as...

Hastertkitty Foleygate...

Iraqiedkitty "Stay the Course"...

Katrinakitty FEMA...

Yankeeskitty The 2006 New York Yankees postseason...

Sabankitty Nick Saban...

Two more cool things...

E-friend Patricia Anthony has been en fuego with her forwards the past few days. First, check out this shot, which supposedly depicts the moon at its closest to the Earth, photographed from near the North Pole (Remember: Click the image to see it full-size):

Polar_moon

The image is strikingly beautiful, but is it what it claims to be?  I dunno.  As images go, this is one where its provenance is just gravy.

Cooler if it's real, still beautiful if it's Photoshopped.

THEN THERE'S THIS SKATEBOARDING DOG, which is just amazing. Pat sent this along a couple days ago.

Eighties Prom Night

Prom_somya_janet Detroit Dixie and her pals threw an Eighties-themed prom-night party Saturday night, and some of the guests were even old enough to remember the decade.

Strange sociological observation by Janet: The new thing at these parties is that everybody brings digital media (cameras, camera phones, camcorders) and records themselves/each other having fun. We noticed at least one person blogging during the party, and I heard this sentence at least twice from two different people: "I'm going to go put this up at MySpace."

Aug. 27-29 Roadtrip: The Index

Leave it to a hurricane and vast human suffering to trivalize a really good time.

Janet and I are just back from a two-night road trip, during which we repeatedly wished we had a laptop and a wi-fi connection, because we wanted to record it as we went.

Madison_frontInstead, I'm going to break it up into segments and post them individually, but add links to this post so that it can serve as an index to the "chapters" and photo galleries.  If Janet winds up posting on the trip, too, I'll add her links as well.

It's not significant on the scale of what people in the Delta are experiencing right now, but...

The trip
We left on Saturday morning, drove up to Spartanburg, ate lunch and drafted my 2005 MFL team. After a beer with the boys I called a place I'd found online in Black Mountain, N.C., and we got a marked-down rate on a suite at The Madison Inn, one of the coolest and quirkiest places on Earth. We got in Saturday evening, stashed our stuff, and ate a good dinner downstairs.

Boone_fork_grandfatherSunday morning we had a huge breakfast, knocked around Black Mountain and then headed north up US Highway 221 to Valle Crusis and The Baird House, a B&B run by our friends Tom and Deede Hinson. We spent the afternoon hiking at Price Park, got something to eat in downtown Boone, then came back to sit on the porch overlooking the Watauga river and catch up with Tom.

On Monday we had coffee with Tom in the kitchen and then drove out of the valley via the "back way" down the Watauga River Road. We left the Blue Ridge the same way we came in, but continued down through Rutherfordton and back to Interstate 26.
