Simply this: if we want to see what would happen if people and organizations worked together in a distributed, grassroots way to create explicit, fact-based directories of meaning, then that future begins with proposing and promulgating open standards that allow my directory of meaning to work in conjunction with a directory of meaning maintained by the Centers for Disease Control and another directory of meaning maintained by the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences.
For now, I don't need to know how they work together, or what the benefits of such interoperability would be. I just have to work out the rules that let the information in one source operate with information from the other. Not arbitrary rules, but a starting point in which interoperability may develop.
