If 2003 was the Year of the Blog and 2004 was the Year of the Podcast, then 2005 is looking more and more like the Year of the Group Blog.
Some of the best group blogs are scientific: Real Climate and Effect Measure come to mind
Majikthise pointed out the launch of a new scientific group blog today: It's called Cosmic Variance, and it's a higly xarkish creation. Yes, the bloggers are scientists, only they're not limiting themselves to science.
There's a comfortable informality to the writing, and what emerges is an image of the scientist as thinking human being, which is a welcome break from the lab-coated, word-parsing automaton stereotype.
Did someone say that scientists are individual idiosyncratic human beings? Gleaming mathematical edifices like the special theory of relativity can give the impression of having dropped from the sky; it’s nice to be reminded of the messy contingent ways that real people happen to stumble upon them.
What we need now is a word for "group blog." You can't become a distinct meme until you've got a name. Any suggestions? And by that, I mean, "Any suggestions other than 'grog?'"
