Semantic markup refers to the idea that writers and editors could embed references to definitive statements of fact within the metadata of the text documents they produce. This could be done in a limited basis with with WYSIWYG word processing interfaces equipped with Zemanta-like real-time suggestions of semantic resources, but to manage the semantic directory behind those links would require that the word-processor be contained within a Semantic Content Management System.
Semantic markup is inline markup, with semantic tags surrounding concepts.
I propose that semantic markup be accomplished with RDF and not "microformats."
