Then-journalist Dan Conover launched Xark as a group blog with the slogan "Because There Are No Unrelated Subjects" in June 2005. It grew to a stable of roughly half-a-dozen regular authors in 2006-2007, with an active community of readers, many of whom were located in Charleston, SC, and Nashville, Tenn..
As the Web changed with the rise of Facebook and Twitter, participation in the social aspects of Xark declined and its conversations moved elsewhere. Conover tweaked the format and design slightly in 2008, dubbing it Xark 2.0.
In March 2010, Conover rebooted the site as his blog home on the Web and canceled all the standing author accounts except those belonging to his wife, Janet Edens, and their friend and frequent blog contributor, John Sloop.
